Campaign for Environmental Justice in India
Since
mid-2004, a nation wide effort has been made by various organisations
and researchers addressing the Ministry of Environment and Forest
over (a) its aggressive and mindless promotion of "development"
that threatens wildlife, environment and human rights, and (b) the
secrecy by which it is pushing though a series of policy and legislative
changes in environmental clearance processes. This network has written
a series of open letters to the Ministry and the Prime Minister's
Office protesting this trend. This has evolved into efforts such
as EC-Watch (Environmental Clearance Watch) for the purpose of monitoring
environmental decision-making processes. This informal group has
rejected sham consultations and walked out of them, protested the
secrecy around the draft National Environment Policy and have managed
to make public this secretive document. This ongoing co-ordinated
effort has recently evolved into a National Campaign for Environmental
Justice in India. On November 13th and 14th
2005, this campaign is organizing "MoEF Suno", a public hearing
to take stock of Environmental Impact Assessment Notification and
Environmental Clearance Process in India, and "MoEF Chalo", a march
to MoEF to present them with individual and collective critiques
of the draft EIA Notification which the Ministry wants to bring
